Did you know that macramé is a type of rope-making? It’s true! Macramé is the art of making geometric patterns with rope. This string craft lends itself to making gorgeous slings, bags, and other accessories. With macramé supplies and simple sewing skills, you can make your own stylish sling bags or handbags. Check out the tutorial below for step-by-step instructions on how to make a macramé sling bag.
Supplies You’ll Need
You’ll need macramé supplies to get started. These include rope, macrame knots, needles and thread, macrame cord, and a macrame bag (a.k.a. corduroy bag). You can also make your own macramé supplies by purchasing rope at a local craft store. Once you have your supplies, it’s time to get sewing!
Thread for macramé
You’ll need a variety of thread colors for your macramé bag. You can use any kind of thread, but avoid using polyester because it’ll fray when exposed to heat. Instead, opt for Natural materials like cotton or linen thread. Cotton is a popular thread choice because it blends in well with most fabrics. Linen thread picks up fabric colors nicely and resists pilling.
Fabric for macramé bag
Your fabric for your macramé bag will also need to be a corduroy. This type of fabric is perfect for macramé because it has a soft texture that’s easy to work with. Corduroy is a durable, heavy fabric that resists pilling and fading. It’s also water resistant, so it’s great for rainy days. Corduroy fabric is a bit stiff, so it’s perfect for making bags or other macramé-inspired items. You can find corduroy fabric in most retail stores. You can also search for corduroy fabric online. For a large bag, you’ll need about 8 yards of fabric. For a smaller bag, you’ll only need 3 yards of fabric.
Macrame Knots for Sling Bags
A macramé knot is a decorative knot used to join two pieces of cord together. They come in a variety of knots and designs. You can choose from a variety of knots like the Herring, the Efib, a Square Knot, and a Double Treble. Choose a knot that complements your bag’s theme and complements your other macramé supplies. For example, a Double Treble Knot complements a flower-inspired bag.
Pattern for your Macrame Bag
Now that you have your supplies, you can start making the bag. You’ll need a pattern to make your bag. You can download a free macramé pattern or draw your own pattern. Since you’ll be working with geometric shapes, you can draw a template to help you keep your design straight.
Set Up Your sewing machine and thread it up.
Start by setting up your sewing machine. Make sure that the needle is threaded properly and that the bobbin is loaded with thread. You’ll also want to make sure that the tension is set to match the fabric type that you’ll be using. If you’re concerned about the tension, you can always try adjusting it before starting your project.
Cut out your pattern piece.
Next, you’ll need to cut out your pattern piece. You can either trace your pattern piece or use an empty fabric sheet as your pattern.
Add interfacing to the bottom of your fabric.
You’ll also want to add interfacing to the bottom of your fabric. This will help your bag stand up when it’s open. The interfacing should be approximately 1/4 inch (6 mm) from the bottom of your pattern.
Sew Your Bottom hem.
Now, you’ll sew the hem on the bottom of your pattern piece. This is a hem that will help the bag stand up when it’s open. Start by turning the pattern piece inside out. You’ll then want to place the hem portion of the pattern inside out towards the wrong side. Next, you’ll want to place a pin at the very beginning of the hemline. You’ll then want to stitch along this line using a 1/4 inch (6 mm) stitch length. You can also use a zipper foot on your sewing machine for this step.
Sew Your Shoulder Strap.
Next, you’ll sew the shoulder strap on the outside. Start by pinning the shoulder strap onto the outside of the bag. Next, stitch along the shoulder strap (on the outside of the bag) using a 1/2 inch (12 mm) stitch length. You can adjust this length depending on the tension of your machine.
Finish by Top Stitching the Bag Together.
Now that you’ve finished sewing the bottom portion of your bag, it’s time to finish sewing the sides of your bag. Start by sewing along the side seams using a 1/2 inch (12 mm) stitch length. There will be two side seams on your bag, so you’ll need to sew along both of them. Next, you’ll want to turn your bag right side out. To make sure that your bag is standing up straight, press the seams while you’re holding the bag up.
Assemble Your Bag, Adjust If Necessary, And Test It Out!
Once your bag is finished, you can enjoy showing it off to your friends and family! You can also make your own macramé sling bags or handbags. These projects are both easy and inexpensive to make, so they make great gifts, too.
